GIF, Boomerang or HD photo: which format to choose?

The question comes up with every quote, and it rests on a misunderstanding: there is nothing to choose. All three formats are included, unlimited. What remains is knowing what each is for — and which actually ends up on Instagram.

Three formats, three uses

All three come out of the same booth, on the same night, at no extra charge. Your guests switch between them on the touchscreen. Here's what each one actually does.

FormatWhat it isWhere it shines
HD photoA sharp, frozen framePortraits, group shots, paper prints
Animated GIF4 photos played on a loopChanging poses, props, groups in motion
BoomerangA burst played back and forthOne gesture: toast, jump, confetti throw

When the GIF wins

The GIF works when something happens between the frames. Four different poses, a prop appearing, someone joining the shot on the third frame: the animation tells a small story in two seconds.

It's the format that works best in groups, because it gives everyone time to react. The first frame catches the hesitant, the fourth catches the laughter. At an office party or a student event, it's almost always the most used.

When the Boomerang wins

The Boomerang, by contrast, needs one clean, single gesture. A toast, a jump, confetti thrown, a dress spinning: the back-and-forth loop makes the motion hypnotic and replays it endlessly.

It's the most shared format on social media, because it loops in the feed without anyone having to click. If your goal is visibility — a brand activation, a launch, a festival — that's the one to encourage.

The HD photo remains the safe bet

Nothing replaces a sharp frame for a family photo, a couple's portrait or a full group you want to hang on a wall. It's also the only format that prints: if you take the printing option at $175 CAD, it's the HD photo that comes out of the printer, as a 4×3 inch Polaroid.

Our field advice: don't try to steer your guests. Over an eight-hour evening, the same person will use all three. That's precisely the point of not having to choose at booking.

Quality, whatever the format

A reception hall late in the evening is a photographic nightmare: little light, coloured sources, backlighting. The AI on board the booth detects faces and adjusts exposure, contrast and white balance on every shot, without anyone touching a setting.

That's the difference between entertainment whose photos get shared and entertainment whose photos stay in the phone. All files go out instantly by email and QR code, then land in the private online gallery, available for 1 year after the event.

Key takeaways

  • HD photo, GIF and Boomerang are all three included, unlimited, in every package.
  • HD photo = the frozen moment, for portraits and group shots you print.
  • GIF = a 4-photo sequence on a loop, for changing poses.
  • Boomerang = a burst played back and forth, for one gesture: a toast, a jump, confetti.
  • The on-board AI sets exposure and white balance on every shot, whatever the format.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to choose between GIF, Boomerang and HD photo?
No. All three formats are included in every package, at no extra charge and with no cap. Your guests choose on the touchscreen, shot by shot. Some will only take photos, others will run Boomerangs all night — both are possible throughout the event.
What is the difference between a GIF and a Boomerang?
The GIF assembles four successive photos and loops them: each image is different, which lets you tell a small sequence by changing poses. The Boomerang captures a short burst and replays it forward then backward, continuously: it is the same gesture repeated endlessly, very effective for a toast or a jump.
Do these formats work on Instagram and on phones?
Yes. GIFs and Boomerangs are produced in formats read natively by Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and phone messaging apps. Guests receive them by email and QR code, with no app to install, and can share them straight from their device.
Is the quality good in a dark room?
That is exactly what the on-board AI handles: on every shot it detects faces and adjusts exposure, contrast and white balance to the actual light. A dimly lit reception hall or a dance floor in coloured lighting does not produce unusable photos.
Can you print a GIF or a Boomerang?
No, those are animated formats: only the HD photo prints. If you take the printing option at $175 CAD, guests leave with a print of their photo and still receive their GIFs and Boomerangs by email and QR code.
