Photo booth outdoors and in cold weather: what to plan for

The first obstacle: connectivity

Outdoors, problem number one is neither light nor cold: it's the network. A festival site, a park, a vineyard or a backyard has no usable Wi-Fi, and a stadium's is saturated the moment the gates open.

What to plan for on site

The booth is not designed for open air. Four conditions, in any season:

• A covered spot — tent, marquee, awning, entrance canopy
• A stable, level surface — soaked grass and loose gravel are best avoided
• Power nearby, mains preferably
• Shade in summer: for guest comfort, and because direct sun on the screen makes it unreadable

Quebec cold: what actually matters

Holiday party under a tent, Christmas market, activation in a winter village: the question comes up every year. Here is the real order of risk.

1. Condensation, by a distance

This is the point that surprises everyone. When very cold equipment enters a heated room, ambient moisture settles instantly on the lens and the electronics. The result: hazy photos for an hour, and a genuine risk to components.

The fix is simple: after transport in deep cold, let the booth acclimatize in its packaging before switching it on. Half an hour is usually enough. That's the instruction we systematically repeat for winter pickups in Saint-Lambert and Quebec City.

2. Humidity and wind-driven snow

A tent open on the windward side lets fine snow in, which melts on contact with the equipment. A shelter closed on three sides beats a larger but draughty one.

3. Your guests' battery life

It isn't the booth that suffers first, it's the phones. In deep cold they shut down within minutes. Because photos also arrive by email, nobody loses their souvenirs — but warn your guests that QR codes scan better indoors.

4. Gloves

A silly detail, yet decisive: a touchscreen doesn't respond to a gloved finger. Place the booth in the heated area where people have already taken their gloves off, not at the tent entrance where they've just arrived.

Summer: light rather than cold

At a festival or an outdoor wedding, the challenge flips. Late-afternoon sun creates harsh backlighting and makes screens hard to read. The on-board AI compensates exposure and white balance automatically on every shot, but a shaded spot is always preferable.

Collecting the booth in winter

Pickup stays free at our Saint-Lambert and Quebec City offices year-round. If you'd rather not transport equipment on poor roads, delivery with setup and pickup costs $175 CAD within a 25 km radius of those two points; beyond that, fees are added based on distance.
